THE HISTORY OF FLORENCE
Our story begins in the 19th century, on Via de’ Cerretani in the heart of Florence, when Eugenio Ottino started his business following the ancient Tuscan and Florentine tradition of the art of leatherwork. Today, as then, Ottino collaborates with artisans in the city and the surrounding area to make leather bags and accessories of the highest quality craftsmanship, obtained from fine hides, tanned and processed by expert hands exclusively in Tuscany.
Thus, as the years passed, the family name became an institution on the city and international scene, thanks mainly to word of mouth from foreign customers in love with Ottino products: authentic, Italian and almost eternal. In fact, we have always-sure of the importance of an ethical approach to production and sales-offer our customers complete maintenance assistance, caring for and remanufacturing our products even many years after purchase. The same reasons guide us today to increasingly favor naturally tanned leathers, sustainable fabrics, accessories made from recycled materials, scarves and hand-painted fabrics.
Ottino is a family story. Over the years, founder Eugenio was joined by his son Massimo, followed later by Paolo and finally by Virginia.
The store has always remained linked to its city, Florence, and its history-from the Grand Tours of the late 19th century, through the war and the flood of November 4, 1966, to the sharp increase in cosmopolitan tourism in recent decades-and it is thanks to the commitment and passion put forth by each member of the family that the business has remained alive for four generations. If Massimo established the company’s name in the city, Paul conquered the Japanese market and moved the headquarters to Via Porta Rossa, in a downtown area that better reflects Ottino’s identity. Today Virginia, the first woman to head the brand, carries on the family business with dedication, reinterpreting the brand’s values in a modern key but never neglecting the indispensable characteristics of Made in Italy craftsmanship and quality so dear to her customers.
